Meaning
We meditate on the adorable radiance of the divine Sun (Savitr), who pervades the earth, the atmosphere and the heavens. May that light awaken and guide our intellect.
The Gayatri Mantra comes from the Rig Veda (3.62.10) and is attributed to the sage Vishvamitra. It is one of the most revered prayers in the Vedic tradition, a request for clarity and right understanding rather than for any worldly gain.
How to chant: sit facing east, keep the spine straight and chant slowly, letting each line settle before the next. Traditionally it is recited at the three junctions of the day (sunrise, noon and sunset).
Best time
Sunrise (Brahma Muhurta), noon and sunset
