The classical observance is to eat lightly, often avoiding grains, and to spend extra time in prayer, reading or nama japa. The aim is not hardship but a lighter body and a clearer mind for devotion.

Families follow either the Smarta or the Vaishnava calendar, which occasionally differ by a day. MyMantra shows the Smarta date; follow your own tradition if it differs.

A fast is optional. Skip if pregnant, unwell, diabetic or on medication; a light sattvic meal is a complete observance too.
