Before you begin
- Gaze softly; blink whenever you need to. Watering eyes are common, so close them and rest.
- Keep the candle at arm's length, at eye level, on a stable surface away from fabric.
- Avoid this practice with epilepsy or photosensitivity, eye strain, recent eye surgery, glaucoma or cataract.
- Remove contact lenses before practice.
Please choose a gentler practice, or ask your teacher first, if you have:
- Epilepsy or photosensitivity
- Glaucoma or cataract
- Recent eye surgery
- Eye strain or dry eyes
- Migraine triggered by light
Not a substitute for medical advice.
Trataka is steady gazing at a candle flame, one of the classical cleansing practices (shatkarma). You gaze softly without straining, then close the eyes and hold the after-image at the brow. Two rounds of gazing and inner seeing build one-pointed attention.
What it supports
- Supports one-pointed attention
- Helps quieten a scattered mind
- Brings a calm, inward focus
