The traditional observance is a day of light eating, Ganesha prayer in the evening and an offering of water to the Moon at moonrise, after which the fast is closed. When it falls on a Tuesday it is called Angaraki Sankashti and is especially valued.
It is a monthly invitation to begin again, with patience and a clearer way forward.
A fast is optional. Skip if pregnant, unwell, diabetic or on medication; a light sattvic meal is a complete observance too.
